Media Fast for 9/2/10

Looking back on this media fast, it was not as difficult a task as I thought it would be to carry out.  I found that instead of listening to music in the morning I could sleep in a little later and take a longer shower.  I missed the music, but it was nice to sleep in.  Instead of listening to my i-pod between classes I  decided to read the Breeze and complete the Sodoku puzzle inside of the paper.  I would have prefered the music, but sodoku is always a fun challenge.

Later, intead of watching TV or going on facebook I went over to a friends house to drink a little and play a couple games.  Between the drinking, beer pong, chess and conversations from all of us I didnt even realize how much time had passed.

I had specifically chose this day for my e-fast.  I knew that because of the Hillel wing night I would be able to talk to a lot of friends without relying on phones to set up any plans.  But even though I planned this out, I found myself cheating a little bit.  I had left my phone on in case of any emergencies and I did my best not to respond to any text messages.  But I did remind a friend when he asked what time our class was that day.

Overall, the music was the hardest to give up for the e-fast.  But I do feel that the e-fast helped in showing that most media is more for pleasure than necessity.  It would have been harder to make plans without the use of a phone if I was not already meeting with a large group of friends, but it still would have been possible

  1. Music was so hard for me to avoid too! I also agree that most media is more pleasurable than necessary. It was really easy for me to avoid my cell phone, internet, and TV but the radio was the hardest because I feel like it's something that other people control. Even going into the restaurants or stores, you're surrounded by the radio/music. I can't even imagine how difficult it would have been X amount of years ago when they didn't have phones to instantly talk to someone.

  2. Music was unavoidable for me as well! We have a radio in our dorm bathroom, and all those cranky girls doing their hair in the morning would have scratched my eyes out if I had even suggested turning off the music. That was the only time I had to cheat...

I also agree with you in regards to making plans with people without a cell phone. I can't even imagine doing it on a regular basis. I warned my friends that I wouldn't be using my phone on the day of my fast, so we made plans before. They would never make plans that far ahead on a regular basis.

    Good job!

  3. Going over to your friends house to pass time by just hanging out and enjoying eachother's company was a really good idea. That's what I decided to do as well in between my classes because it definetly helped the time pass by alot faster! And I also agree with you that music was one of the hardest things to go without for twenty four hours because I always have it on! But good job!

  4. I found that socialization really helped me pass the time on my fast day as well. I guess I never really realized how easy it is to socialize while eliminating media at the same time.

  5. I really like the things you put in the place of using different forms of media, such as reading the breeze and doing the sudoku puzzle. I had a hard time with this fast, but it was harder for me to avoid using my cell phone more than anything else.

  6. Interesting that some students consider texting to be "socializing." I'm glad you were able to have quality time with your friends!
